Where Were You That Day in September, Two Thousand One?
A moment in time
I remember the day in the receiving department. For the first time ever, one of the employees talked us into listening to the radio instead of listening to the canned radio music that usually plays.
Then the news broke into the music broadcast.
That’s weird, we all thought. Why is this happening?
They told us that a plane had flown into the World Trade Center.
It couldn’t be real.
After all, we didn’t have a visual, and we had a truck to unload.
My head went to the descriptions I’d read about “War of the Worlds” freaking people out in the past.
It couldn’t be real.
We kept unloading the truck half-listening, working along as efficiently as possible. That crew never really was efficient.
When the broadcast told us about a second plane, we really stopped and looked around at each other, not sure how to proceed. We were in a retail store loading dock in NC, and we felt like we had been punched in the gut.
The feeling of mourning that permeated the store the rest of that day was overwhelming. I was happy to see my girlfriend when she found her way to the store to see me.
No more work got done. You could tell whether people had heard the news by the expression on their faces.
I’ll never forget that day.
